Class 9

To be ready for class:

  1. Review last week's video on how to give polite advice about the past.
  2. Review the content from Theme 3.
  3. Check out the Reading Project.

What we'll do in class:

Speaking to warm up: From polite advice about the past to what you've been doing lately (20 minutes)

  1. Use phrases from "Giving polite advice about the past" to encourage a conversation about recent study-related habits.

Reading Project: What it is

  1. We'll make sure you understand what to do.

Speaking practice: The lie detector game

  1. Make quick notes for something unusual that happened to you in your life. It can be true or dreamt up.
  2. Ask each other questions to figure out who is telling the truth and who isn't.

Note-taking review:

  1. Review what good notes look like.
  2. Let's transform this paragraph into note form together:
    • "There are a number of facial expressions and associated reactions that could indicate someone is lying to you," FBI veteran Mark Bouton says. "Some are caused by nervousness, some by chemical reactions, and others by physical reactions."
  1. Now try doing this one:
    • "A person will ordinarily blink about five or six times a minute, or once every 10 or 12 seconds," Bouton says. "When stressed — for instance, when someone knows he's lying — he may blink five or six times in rapid succession."

Solid paragraphs: Speaking & Writing from notes (50 minutes)

  1. What makes a solid paragraph?
  2. Show your partner one of the paragraphs you've written this term. Together, decide how satisfying it is based on the following:
    • clear focus (topic sentence)
    • satisfying details
    • overall clarity
  3. With your partner, practice speaking from your notes about the video from last week's class "5 warning signs someone is lying to you".
  4. Now write a paragraph that includes a piece of information from your notes.
  5. Now let's see what Virtual Writing Tutor says about your paragraph:
    • Visit the site and follow the instructions there to get automatic feedback.
